A child crouches beside a friend, carefully balancing wooden blocks into a bridge. They disagree about where the final piece belongs, try two ideas, laugh when the structure falls, and begin again. It may look like a small moment of play. Yet within it, children are practising language, spatial reasoning, collaboration, persistence and emotional regulation. Can play improve classroom achievement? When it is purposeful, well-supported and woven into excellent teaching, the answer is yes.

Can play improve classroom achievement?

A coding challenge can teach precision because students want their programme to work, not simply because a worksheet requires an answer.
The value of nature and movement
A child’s body is part of their learning system. Movement, sensory experience and time outdoors can help children reset attention, regulate energy and encounter ideas in concrete ways. Measuring shadows, observing seasonal change or calculating the materials needed for a bird shelter offers a different route into formal concepts.
Nature-connected learning is especially valuable for children who find long periods of desk-based work difficult. It does not lower expectations. Instead, it offers more than one way to enter the learning. A pupil who struggles to explain an idea immediately in writing may first demonstrate it with objects, discuss it with a partner or observe it outside. With skilled support, those experiences can then lead into precise spoken and written language.
