Nature Classrooms at EDUCA: How Green-Mindedness Grows
Before a child learns to name a tree, they already know how to be with one. They reach for bark, listen to wind, follow an ant with absolute focus. This is not distraction – it is the most natural form of attention a human brain possesses. At EDUCA, we have built our nature classrooms around one simple conviction: learning does not happen despite the outdoors. It happens because of it.
There is a growing body of neuroeducational evidence suggesting that the human brain did not evolve for the four-walled classroom. It evolved, over hundreds of thousands of years, in nature – responding to light, movement, texture, sound and the unpredictable richness of the living world. When we place a child in a sterile indoor environment and ask them to sit still and focus, we are working against the very architecture of their mind. When we take that child outside, we are working with it.
This is not a romantic notion. It is neuroscience. Attention Restoration Theory, first proposed by Rachel and Stephen Kaplan, identifies natural environments as uniquely restorative for the prefrontal cortex – the region responsible for focused attention, decision-making and impulse regulation. Unlike urban or screen-based stimuli, which demand directed, effortful attention and deplete cognitive resources, nature engages what researchers call soft fascination: a gentle, involuntary form of attention that allows the executive mind to rest and recover. A child who has spent time in a garden or forest returns to a task not with less energy, but with more.
What Distraction Actually Looks Like
We are accustomed to thinking of nature as a source of distraction – the butterfly that breaks concentration, the puddle that derails a lesson. In reality, the opposite tends to be true. Research consistently shows that children who spend regular time learning outdoors display reduced stress markers, lower cortisol levels and greater sustained attention than those confined to indoor settings. The so-called distraction of the natural world is, neurologically speaking, a form of engagement. It is the classroom that is often the source of cognitive friction.
At EDUCA, our nature sessions are not breaks from learning. They are learning environments in their own right – carefully designed around the same NTC Framework principles that guide all our teaching. The Ignite phase of a lesson might begin under an oak tree, with an observation that raises a question no child can resist. The Explore phase might involve mapping root systems or measuring rainfall. Connection and transformation happen through conversation, drawing, discussion and the slow, unhurried process of making meaning from the world beyond the window.
Green-Mindedness as a Way of Knowing
Green-mindedness, as we understand it at EDUCA, is not simply an environmental attitude. It is a cognitive orientation – a habit of attention, care and interconnected thinking that begins in early childhood and shapes the way a person approaches every domain of life. A child who has learned to observe a caterpillar closely, to notice seasonal change, to understand that what they do to a plant community has consequences – that child is developing systems thinking, empathy and long-range perspective alongside their science knowledge.
This is precisely where nature-connected learning and neuroeducation converge. The NTC Framework recognises that lasting learning requires emotional engagement, sensory experience and the activation of multiple neural pathways simultaneously. Nature provides all three without effort. The smell of rain on soil, the weight of a stone, the surprising warmth of a sun-lit patch of moss – these are not incidental pleasures. They are the raw material of memory encoding, the anchors to which conceptual understanding attaches itself and holds.
Finland’s Lesson and EDUCA’s Practice
Finnish education has long understood what neuroscience is now confirming. Finnish schools spend a significant portion of the school day outside, across all seasons and all weather conditions. The philosophy is not that nature is a nice addition to learning – it is that nature is one of learning’s primary habitats. Children in Finland are not taught about the environment as an abstract subject. They inhabit it, observe it and develop a relationship with it that informs their scientific, ethical and aesthetic thinking for life.
At EDUCA, we have brought this philosophy to our Belgrade campus and grounded it in the deeper framework of neuroeducational practice. Our nature classroom is not a curriculum add-on. It is woven into the teaching cycle, integrated with indoor learning and treated with the same pedagogical rigour as any other learning environment. We observe, we question, we connect, we consolidate – always with the understanding that a child’s brain is not fighting against the outdoors. It is, quite literally, at home there.
Green-mindedness begins not with a lesson about the planet but with a morning in the garden, a handful of soil and the quiet, irreplaceable experience of paying attention to something alive. That is where the learning starts – and, in our experience, it rarely stops.
Neuroeducation tells us that the brain learns best when it is calm, curious and engaged. Nature delivers all three at once. Green-mindedness is not something we teach at EDUCA – it is something we allow to grow.
